UCLouvain SIG PAIN conference: The endocannabinoid system and pain: from analgesia to resolution.

Seminar and meetings
Chronic pain management is an unmet medical need of critical societal importance. Besides affecting the quality of life and the mental state of the patients, it constitutes an economic burden on society. Anti-inflammatory drugs and analgesics are very effective in acute settings, and although they help to relieve the patients’ symptoms, they find their limitations in chronic settings, mainly because they target symptom reduction rather than biological processes driving pain resolution. This leads to patients experiencing chronic pain or a dependence on pain medications. Thus, it is important to tackle pain, and more particularly chronic pain, from another front and identify mediators and targets that drive the resolution of pain.
The aim of our group is to identify novel molecular targets and mechanisms that promote the resolution of pain, thereby shifting the paradigm from pain management to pain resolution. We use both hypothesis-generating and hypothesis-driven approaches. For instance, our preliminary data highlight the pro-resolutive properties of endocannabinoids and related lipids.
